A Pet's Plea
Treat me kindly my beloved friend,
for no heart in all the world is more grateful
for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick,
for though I should lick your hand between blows,
your patience and understanding will more quickly
teach me the things you would have for me to learn.
Speak to me often, for your voice
is the worlds' sweetest music, as you must know
by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a
domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements.
I ask no greater glory then the privilege of sitting
at your feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding,
to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life
should your life be in danger.
And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight,
do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having fun.
Please see that my trusting life is taken gently.
I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw
that my fate was always safest in your hands.

"Knight" was in many homes before he finally came to his permanent home with Carl and Karla Bollinger. He is deaf, which may have contributed to his having so many different homes. He follows hand signals very well, but does not hear, and was probably thought to be disobedient by his previous owners. (Update: Knight passed away Feb. 2005, but will live forever in our memories.)

"Jiggs" was found along side of the road when he was about two days old. He was fed on a bottle and grew up to be a nice big boy. He has been a very strong willed dog, we believe this is due to not having his mother and siblings to learn from. Owned by Carl and Karla Bollinger.

"Teddy" is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi owned by Bruce and Cay Godtfring. Teddy's AKC registration gives his name as "Kingsburys Teddy Highers." The Godtfrings adopted Teddy from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Rescue Committee in December 1992 when Teddy was 18 months old. Teddy arrived at the Casper airport from Muskogee, Ok where he was met by his new owners. The Godtfrings had seen a video of him before the adoption but when they saw him it was love at first sight and he rapidly became a member of the family. Teddy is known as "Mr. Congeniality" by his neighbors since he likes to play with all the dogs in the neighborhood whether they're male or female. Corgi's are known for their pleasant disposition and Teddy exemplifies it.

"In Memory of Sparky Joe" Sparky's first owner passed away, and while temporarily at a foster home, he was adopted by Bernice Wolf. He was her companion and friend for 4 years. He passed away Nov. 1998 of water on the brain. He is truly missed.

"Abby" came to live with the Bollingers in 1990. She has been a very important part of the family. In 1996, she was hit by a car and not expected to live. With good vet care and TLC from her family, she did survive. The accident did take its toll on her. Abby's strong desire to live has made her even more important to us. We admire her courage and determination to carry on. Abby is a poodle cross. (update: Abby passed away Oct.2004, but will live forever in our memories.)

"Molly" was adopted, as her original family, did not like her terrier behavior. She is a very verbal dog, with lots of personality. She keeps a vigilance on her property and eagerly lets everyone know when any thing strange is around. The Bollingers find her very amusing. (Update: Molly passed away May 2005, but will live forever in our memories.)

"Oscar" is another Schnauzer who was taken to a vet clinic to be put to sleep. The vet not wanting to put him down, called the Bollingers as he knew they already had one schnauzer, Molly. Carl and Karla adopted him in 1992. When he was first adopted he did not like much physical contact. He was neutered and has become a very loving and enjoyable pet. His position in the dog family is to keep every dog in line. (Update: Oscar passed away July 2005, but will live forever in our memories.)

"Sophia Taco Bell" is a Chihuahua given as a Christmas gift to Bernice Wolf, after the loss of her wonderful little dog Sparky Joe. The loss of a pet can be very difficult, and to replace one is impossible, however, a new companion can help heal the loss and fill the house with activity. She was a young puppy and her need of love and care hastened her role as a very very important friend and companion. She is the center of attention in her home.

"In Memory of Chatters" Some pets are quite different. Chatters was a baby squirrel that was found abandoned, cold and hungry. He was bottle fed, but his release back into the wild was not successful, so he became a member of our animal family. He lived with the Bollingers for six years.

"In Memory of Captain" Captain was a retired greyhound racing dog. He was brought to a vet clinic to be put to sleep. He was such a beautiful and loving dog, the vet felt that this was not an option. His new family tried to make up for the life he had previously lead. He was allowed to live in the house with the family. He readily accepted this and truly was a joy to be around. He passed away of a brain tumor, thought to be caused by his previous life experiences.

"Rainey" is a Beagle cross who was dumped during a severe spring storm. She lived with the Bollingers until a permanent home could be found. She was placed in a home, but because of a divorce, was later returned to the Bollingers. Rainey had some behavior problems which had to be dealt with, so the Bollingers decided to make her a member of the dog family. She is a trusted member of the family and delights in guarding any personal belongings of the Bollingers. (Update: Rainey passed away November 2004, but will live forever in our memories.)

"Kenai" Is an Alaskan Husky who was very afraid of people due to some trauma in her life. With lots of love and patience she is starting to come out of her shell. She even comes and greets family and friends who are visiting. Her tender loving personality was hidden, due to her fear of people. After she learned her pecking order in our family she has become one of the gang. One fault the Bollingers find with her is she likes to dig holes in the yard.

"Faldo" is a Heeler cross that was dumped at a roadside rest stop. He is a very smart dog, loves going to the barn and being busy. Although he is very physical and active, he has a side to him that likes to be loved and cuddled. He wants to please and learns new things very quickly. He has the most beautiful coat of black and white. Faldo is the expression of the true ranch dog.

"Wee Willie" is a long-haired dachshund mix that was put in a dumpster and taken to the dump. He is a very loving and happy little fellow, even though someone was not so kind to him. He loves to go for rides and to town. His favorite buddy is Knight. Knight was a loner until Wee Willie came to live with us. Wee Willie is everyone's friend and keeps life interesting.

"In Memory of Mae West" She was a Miniature Mare, full name "Oak Forest Mae West". Mae died February 20, 2005 during surgery for twisted gut. She produced 7 registered foals. Although Mae lived with us only a short time we loved her and admired her true grit right to the end. One hour before her surgery on her last walk she was eager to please, wanted to run and whinny, and anxious to see other horses. She was a treasure that left us too soon and will always be remembered. We love you Mae West.

"Patches"
is an English Springer Spaniel, full name "Sir Dotson Patches". Patches is very protective of his home and family, loves the water, but would rather retrieve tennis balls than birds. He's had some near misses in his 13 years. Poisoned once and then mauled by a neighborhood Rottweiler who didn't take kindly to Patches' puppy-like disposition. As the family has since dispersed in several directions out of Lander, having Patches put down was once considered an option due to his advancing age. BUT... his puppy-like disposition persisted and other arrangments were made. One more near miss, Patches.
(Update: Patchy was cared for with much love by Jason during his last few months of life. When it finally came to the point that Patchy was no longer enjoying life, he was allowed to go with dignity. We said good bye to Patches on February 7, 2007, but he will be remembered forever in our hearts.)

"Tiger" aka "Mama's Baby Tiger Kitty" is a long haired gray and orange tabby cat adopted by Sharon in 1999. He's gone from being an independent outdoor cat to a city apartment dwelling cat and is adapting quite well. Tiger's very affectionate with those he knows, but is still a bit of a "scaredy cat". When the door buzzer rings, he hides in the bathroom cupboard, which he opens and closes himself.
